Jefferies 1964 Construction Plans


The original release (2007) was actually just a compilation of dimensions from Richard Datin. These figures formed a starting point and were compared against known figures of the studio models.

This was followed up by a fresh redrawing of the Enterprise based on a combination of those original figures and small sections of the original plans that had been made public by William McCullars. Using the known dimensions I was able to correct any distortion in those small sections and extrapolate a lot of the original plans' contours.

I had started in on fleshing out those plans in 2014, but held off on releasing any updates as the work hadn't been that significant.

In November of 2015 Richard Datin's daughter published a book on her father's work which included a number of images of the original plans. While the images at first appear to be of such low quality and are extremely distorted (by the author during the laying out of the book's pages) that to many they would seem worthless... but knowing the original dimensions and having my earlier drawings to use as a framework, I was able to make tremendous progress extrapolating useful data.

I infused this new data into my previous drawings over the course of a few months in a series of updates. What was most interesting was the inclusion of key elements of the October 1964 plans. Those were the original plans for the model before the Enterprise had been rescaled to the larger (947 foot) version we have all become familiar with. Two of the main design changes that accompanied the change in scale were the forward deflector assembly on the secondary hull and the inclusion of the undercut below the hangar bay doors.

Interestingly, the curvier design for the secondary hull present in the November 1964 plans wasn't used during the building of either the 33 inch or 11 foot studio models. The secondary hull's of those models reflect the contours of the earlier October 1964 plans.

One of the interesting aspects of the original studio models is how they differed from each other. And one of the most notable differences is the contours of the primary hulls. Unfortunately for Jefferies, replicating contours from one drawing to the next can be difficult. Jefferies presented a total of five possible upper surface contours for the model makers to pick from and in the case of the 33 inch Enterprise (built by Datin) it looks like the most "s" like contour was chosen.

There isn't a good match to the lower contour of the primary hull of the 33 inch model on Jefferies' plans, so this may have been the best compromise based on how the part was originally turned. The lower sensor dome assembly is also a significant deviation from the Jefferies' plans which may have been needed to deal with an unforeseen aspect of the primary hull (the lower sensor dome assembly is wider than called for on the plans and may have been needed to cover over a whole).
